USGS Rainfall map of Hurricane (and later Tropical Storm) Agnes

In the months following Tropical Storm Agnes, the USGS and NOAA studied the flood levels. In this photo, (the original report has no legible photos), the 100-year flood stage is about 2.5 feet above the road surface at the immediate end of the bridge (roughly the top of the dumpster). The 500-year flood stage is about 6 feet above the road surface at the end of the bridge, or roughly the top of the SUV that is crossing the bridge. The estimated stage of the Agnes flood was at midpoint between 100-year and 500-year stages. Photo by Mike Carter.Agnes Flood Stage

This buiding was next to the fire station. The rear portion of the building broke loose and floated into the middle of Route 50 in front of the building. The flood also damaged the remainder of the building, causing it to lean as shown in the photo. Photo credit Buzzy Carter.Colonel John's Trading Post, Rear View

The Aldie VFD could always rely on our faithful Auxiliary to provide food and drinks when needed. In the background, Little River barely contains itself as the waters recede. High water mark can be seen on the column next to the entrance door. At the maximum height of the flood, Little River was nearly 1000 feet wide. Left to right are: David Fiske, unknown resident, Mary Alice Flippo, and Richard Fiske. Photo credit the Rev. S. Neale Morgan.Firehouse parking lot after Agnes floodwaters begin to recede.

The lady in the center of the photo was trapped on the second floor of the home across from the firehouse for several hours before being rescued. Firemen used an Arcola-Pleasant Valley VFD engine and a ladder laid from the hosebed to a second floor window. The engine was tied off to a fully-loaded gasoline tanker to keep the engine from washing down river. Earlier rescue attempts by the Middleburg VFD were abandoned when their boat was swept down river and destroyed in the area of Tail Race Rd.
